Some of us ran, some walked, and others explored at a more leisurely pace, but however we got around, we all enjoyed the rare opportunity to experience our work up close.
The day offered a behind-the-scenes look at one of the city’s most significant infrastructure projects. Guests were guided through key areas of the tunnel and associated structures, observing firsthand the scale, engineering, and design that have shaped the project. The outreach team was on hand throughout the day, providing information, engaging with visitors, and helping convey both the technical and architectural aspects of the work, including explanations of improved routes and traffic adjustments resulting from the project.
From a design perspective, the West Gate Tunnel Project draws inspiration from the maritime history of the area. The design is an abstraction of fishing nets and the colourful maritime life flowing in and out, expressed through sculptural timber elements that create rhythm, texture, and a sense of movement along the roadways and tunnels.
It was a day that celebrated innovation, creativity, and collaboration, and was made even more memorable by the incredible turnout and enthusiastic support from the community.
